Man Caught Driving Drunk With Child, 2, in Car on Thanksgiving Eve: Police

Six people were nabbed at the checkpoint, police said.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A Riverhead man was slapped with a felony driving while intoxicated charge after he was caught driving drunk with a child, 2, in his car, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, Horme Guzman-Mendez, 26, was charged with violating Leandra's Law, a felony, after he was arrested on Thanksgiving Eve during an East End DWI task force initiative. The child, a family member, was released to another relative, police said.

Also arrested and charged with DWI during the checkpoint, which took place on West Main Street in Riverhead between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., were Jose Palacios, 36, of Hampton Bays, Nery Aparicio, 30, Riverhead, Steven Stamatatos , 46, of Coram, Tyler Madden 21, of Flanders, and David Christopher, 28 Wading River, police said.
