Man Charged With DWI, Leaving Scene Of Accident: Cops
Police were notified about a vehicle traveling erratically at a high rate of speed in Peconic, police say.

PECONIC, NY — A Mattituck man was arrested after he allegedly drove drunk and left the scene after a hit and run, police said.
According to Southold Town Police, James R. Wells, 53, was arrested on Saturday at 8:42 p.m. on Route 25 in Peconic and charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.
Southold Town Police were notified about an erratic driver operating a pickup truck at a high rate of speed and in an erratic manner, police said.

An officer located the vehicle on Route 25 in Peconic and stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation, police said.
Wells was found to be intoxicated after failing several roadside sobriety tests, police said.

He was arrested, transported to police headquarters, processed and held pending arraignment; Well's vehicle was seized in accordance with Suffolk County law, police said.
In addition, Southold Town Police were alerted to the fact that Wells was possibly involved in a hit and run crash in Riverhead, police said. The Riverhead Police Department investigated the incident and charged Wells with leaving the scene of an accident, police said.
