Man Drove While Intoxicated With 3 Children, Ages 3 Months, 2, And 4 Years Old, In Vehicle: Police

He was caught driving while intoxicated with 3 children in his vehicle in Riverhead Saturday afternoon, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A Riverhead man was arrested after driving while intoxicated with three small children in his vehicle Saturday afternoon, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, on Saturday at about 1:13 p.m., the police department's highway patrol unit conducted the traffic stop of a 2021 Toyota Tacoma for traffic violations in the area of Northville Turnpike and Union Avenue.

Amilcar Carreto Lopez, 31, was operating the vehicle while he was intoxicated and had three children — ages 3 months, 2 years and 4 years — along with an adult passenger in the vehicle, police said.

Carreto Lopez was subsequently arrested and charged with DWI, a felony under Leandra's law, as well as three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, police said.

Carreto Lopez's vehicle was impounded; he was processed and held for Sunday morning arraignment, police said.
