Man On Drugs Crashes Into Pole With Child, 6, in Car: Police

The little boy was unharmed and picked up by a family member, police said.

RIVERHEAD, NY - A Wading River man driving on drugs crashed his car into a telephone with a little boy, 6, in the car, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, a report came in Saturday at 10:02 a.m. about an accident at 3590 Route 25 in Calverton.

Police said a 2014 white Ram pickup driven by Michael K. Winters, 45, of Wading River, was heading east on Route 25 when he hit a telephone pole.

Winters was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to be checked for injuries, police said. The child was unharmed and picked up by a family member, police said.

Upon further investigation, Winters was found to be under the influence of drugs, police said. He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated alcohol and drugs, Leandra's Law violation, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, police said. Winters was taken to Riverhead Police headquarters for processing after being released from the hospital, police said.
