Man At Splish Splash Found With What Looks Like Handgun: Cops

CALVERTON, NY — A man tried to enter Splish Splash with what appeared to be a handgun — but was actually a BB gun, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, the incident took place at Splish Splash in Calverton on Sunday at 12:33 p.m.; a man was trying to enter the park when a park employee who was checking his backpack found what appeared to be a handgun, police said.

The man took his bag and attempted to leave, but Splish Splash security followed him and called 911, police said.

The man fled from park security and ran north through the parking lot, jumping over a fence and crossing over Middle Country Rd. with the backpack, police said.

Numerous officers responded to the scene and set up a perimeter; Riverhead K9 unit, Suffolk County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police and the Suffolk County Police aviation unit responded to assist in the search, police said.

At 2 p.m., Shemari McKenzie, 21, from Laurelton, NY, finally surrendered to authorities, police said.

McKenzie still had, in his possession, the backpack and weapon, which was an imitation Glock handgun and actually a BB gun, police said.

McKenzie was arrested and charged with obstructing governmental authority, a misdemeanor, police said. He was processed and held at police headquarters, police said.
