Man Found Dead In Tent In Riverhead Woods: Police

A man known as only "Oscar" was found wearing multiple layers of clothing and jackets along with blue jeans and black boots, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A man was found dead in a tent in the woods in Riverhead Thursday, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, at 10:51 p.m., a call came in regarding a medical emergency involving an "unconscious and unresponsive" man in a tent encampment within the wooded area located south of Riverhead Building Supply on Pulaski Street and south of the nearby Long Island Rail Road tracks.

When police and Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps arrived, it was determined that the man had died of an unknown cause, police said.

The Riverhead Police Department's detective division and the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office were notified and responded to the location to assist with the investigation, police said.

Other people who live in the tent encampment told police that the deceased man was known only as "Oscar"; they didn't know his last name or date of birth, police said.

He is described as a white, Hispanic man in his 40s or 50s, about 5-feet, 4-inches tall about about 150 lbs., police said. He was found wearing multiple layers of clothing and jackets along with blue jeans and black boots.

No foul play was initially suspected but the investigation is ongoing, police said.
