Man Points Gun At Crowd, Fires Into Roadway: Cops

A group of 20 people were in the street, ready to brawl, when the man pulled the gun, police say.

CALVERTON, NY — A man in Calverton was arrested when, among a crowd of people who were ready to brawl, he pulled out a handgungun, pointed it at the group, then fired a round into the roadway, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, the incident took place on Sunday night at 8:10 p.m. at the intersection of Kay Road and Calverton Court; a police officer on patrol found about 20 people in the street at the intersection.

The officer activated his overhead lights, which caused the group to begin breaking up after the gunshots, police said.

The officer chased the man with the gun behind a residence on Kay Road, at which time he lost sight of him; additional officers and a K-9 unit continued the search, which proved unsuccessful, police said

No injuries were reported, police said.

The incident is under investigation, with the man wanted for first degree reckless endangerment, and anyone with information is asked to call the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500.
