Man Struck By 2 Vehicles Dies; First Driver Flees Scene: Cops

A 72-year-old Riverhead man died after he was hit by two cars while crossing West Main St., police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A Riverhead man, 72, died after he was struck by two vehicles while crossing West Main Street Monday, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, at 5:06 p.m., numerous reports came in about a motor vehicle crash on Route 25 just west of Marcy Avenue.

Callers reported that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle and that CPR was being initiated by bystanders, police said. Upon arrival, responding patrol officers found a man lying in the roadway with first aid being administered, police said.

Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded, treated the patient, and transported him to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased, police said.

West Main Street remained closed Monday night between Raynor Avenue and Marcy Avenue as the investigation remained ongoing.

Preliminary information indicated that the pedestrian appeared to have been crossing Main Street from south to north; when he was standing in the middle of the roadway, he was initially struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound and then by a second vehicle traveling westbound, police said.

The first vehicle, believed to be a small white SUV, did not stop at the scene and may have driver's side damage; a mirror was recovered at the scene, police said. The driver of the second vehicle remained at the scene following the crash, police said. The Riverhead Police Department's detective division is asking anyone that may have information regarding the crash to contact detectives at 631-727-4500 Ext 289.
