Motorcyclist Airlifted After Crash: Police

BREAKING: The driver of the car was issued a traffic summons for failing to stop at the intersection, police said.

CALVERTON, NY — A motorcyclist was airlifted after a crash involving a car in Calverton Thursday night, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, the crash took place at 6:19 p.m. at the intersection of Manor Road and Twomey Avenue in Calverton.

A 2001 Toyota Camary driven by Paul J. Mejia of Middle Island and a 2009 Harley Davidson operated by Charles R. Pitre of Mastic were involved in a collision at the intersection, police said.

Pitre suffered injuries to his lower extremities and was transported from the scene by Riverhead Town Volunteer Ambulance to a designated landing zone at Riley Avenue Elementary School; Riverhead Fire Department responded to the landing zone and assisted, police said.

Pitre was airlifted by Suffolk County Aviation to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

Mejia was not injured and remained on the scene, police said.

Riverhead Police detectives were called to the scene to investigate the accident; it was determined that Mejia failed to stop at the intersection of Twomey Avenue and Manor Road.

Mejia, while crossing Manor Road into Pitre's eastbound travel lane, was struck on the rear passenger side of his Camry by the motorcycle, police said.

Pitre was ejected from the motorcycle, police said.

Mejia was issued a traffic summons on scene for failing to stop at the intersection, police said.
