Pedestrian Dies After Being Hit By Pickup Truck in Riverhead: Police
The 23-year-old who died may also have been struck by a second driver who left the scene, police say.
RIVERHEAD, NY — A 23-year-old Middle Island man died after he was struck by one vehicle, and possibly a second, in Riverhead Friday night, police said.
Dean Arnum, 23, of Middle Island, was hit in front of the Apple Honda car dealership on Route 58 at 6:02 p.m., police said. Armum, who was crossing Old County Road, was hit by a 2013 Ford F-150 truck driven by Jimmy Butts, 71, of Calverton, police said.
Butts stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said. It was later determined that Arnum was also possibly struck by another driver who left the scene, police said.

Arnum was pronounced dead at Peconic Bay Medical Center, police said. No criminal charges were filed against Butts, authorities added.
The Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps. responded, as did the Riverhead Police Department's detective squad, police said.

The New York State Police Department's accident reconstruction team was also requested.
