Pedestrian In Serious Condition After Being Struck By Car: Cops

The man suffered head and leg injuries, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A pedestrian is in serious condition after he was struck by a vehicle in Riverhead Friday morning, police said.

According to Riverhead Police, a call came in at 7:19 a.m. about a crash with serious injuries involving a pedestrian on Middle Road near John Wesley Village.

Upon arrival, police found a 59-year old man lying in the roadway with leg and head injuries, police said.

The pedestrian was struck by a 2005 Ford Focus after entering the westbound lane of Middle Rd. into the path of the westbound vehicle; the driver remained at the scene, police said.

The vehicle was later impounded for safety checks, police said.

Riverhead Town Volunteer Ambulance Corps EMTs responded and transported the injured man to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is listed in serious condition, police said. The operator of the vehicle was checked on scene by EMTS and not transported, police said.

The Riverhead Police Department's detective division and the New York State Police Department's accident investigation unit responded to the scene; Middle Rd. between Ostrander Ave. And Roanoke Ave. was shut down to traffic for the duration of the investigation, police said.
