Police: Man Fights Police After Stealing Bicycle From Walmart
The arrest was made on Friday.

A Shirley man was arrested on Friday for wrestling a police officer and attempting to remove his weapon after he was confronted for stealing a bicycle from a Riverhead Walmart, according to Riverhead Town Police
Riverhead Police Department received a call from the Walmart at about 7 p.m. reporting that a man removed a black colored BMX bicycle from the store without paying, police said.

The man was last seen by Walmart security traveling towards CR-58 with the bicycle, according to police.

Responding officers were alerted to a man who was in possession of a new black bicycle at the Hess gas station located on the south side of CR-58 across from Walmart, police said.
As the officers approached the man, identified as Darrell Thomas, 34, he walked away from the bicycle and was confronted in the parking lot of the gas station, police said.

As Thomas was being interviewed and instructed by police, he became combative and attempted to flee, police said.
While attempting to subdue him, Thomas began to wrestle with the officers and placed his hand on one of the officer‘s service weapon and attempted to remove the secured weapon from its holster, police said.
He was eventually subdued and arrested for second degree attempted criminal possession of a weapon, fifth degree criminal possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, petty larceny, second degree obstructing governmental administration, and unlawful possession of marijuana, according to police.
He was held overnight for arraignment in Riverhead Justice Court.
