Police: Riverhead Woman Arrested For Leaving Scene of Serious Accident

The woman crashed into a taxi, which rolled over onto its roof and sent the driver to the hospital.

A Riverhead woman was arrested after leaving the scene of an accident where a taxi overturned in Riverhead on Saturday night, according to Riverhead Town Police.

Riverhead Police received 911 calls of an accident with injuries between two cars, shortly before 8:30 p.m., according to police.

After arriving to the scene in front of Morgan Stanley on East Main Street in Riverhead, officers found Marcus D. Booker, 23, the driver of the Riverhead Town Taxi that overturned in the accident, police said.

Booker was conscious, but sustained injuries believed to be serious in the accident and was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital by Riverhead Town Volunteer Ambulance for medical treatment, according to police.

An SUV with front end damage described by witnesses left the accident scene, police said.

Police found the taxi was traveling westbound on State Route 25 behind the SUV.

The SUV was slowing and attempting to make a left turn onto Howell Lane when the taxi proceeded to make a left hand pass over the double yellow lines as the SUV was turning left, was struck by the SUV and rolled over onto its roof before coming to a stop, according to police.

The driver of the SUV, Judith E. Hettrick, 53, was found at 625 East Main Street in Riverhead and arrested for leaving the scene of an accident with serious personal injury, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, driving with a suspended registration and obstructing government administration, according to police.

Both cars were impounded for safety inspections.
