RIVERHEAD, NY — Long Island residents will soon be able to receive free smoke detectors.

New York State Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio will join Red Cross workers who will be traveling to Long Island to install the smoke alarms; she will present them with a proclamation Friday at 9 a.m. at the Riverhead Fire Department, located at 540 Roanoke Avenue.

The Red Cross will also be providing residents with information about fire safety, including what to do if a fire starts in a home, the common causes of house fires, and how to create an escape plan.

“A working and properly installed fire alarm can prevent tragedy and save lives. I thank the Red Cross for stepping up to travel throughout Long Island this Friday to ensure people that need alarms have them, and to help equip people with the knowledge they need to prevent house fires from starting in the first place,” said Giglio. “I encourage anyone who does not have a smoke alarm, or has an alarm that is no longer working or may not be properly placed or installed, to sign up to take advantage of this potentially life-saving opportunity."

The home visits will last about 20 minutes and are free. Long Island residents interested in having a fire alarm installed in their homes should click this link to register for the distribution as soon as possible:
