Report Of Possible Armed Man Closes Street: Police

He was thought to possibly have a handgun, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — Reports of a possible armed man in Riverhead closed down a street Wednesday morning, police said.

According to Riverhead Police, the incident took place at 7:36 a.m. when authorities received a report of a man possibly armed with a handgun inside a home on Roanoke Avenue.

Multiple Riverhead Police and New York State Police officers responded to the scene and were able to detain the man, police said. Roanoke Avenue was closed for a brief time during the investigation, police said. Riverhead Police notified the Riverhead School District and other surrounding schools, police said.

The suspected handgun turned out to be a pellet gun, police said.
