Riverhead High School Receives Recognition From NJROTC

The school received a letter and certificate of recognition designating it as an NJROTC Distinguished Unit with Academic Honors.

Riverhead High School Principal Charles Regan recently received a letter and certificate of recognition from the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) designating Riverhead High School as an NJROTC Distinguished Unit with Academic Honors for the 2013-2014 school year.

Riverhead High School is one of 11 of the 56 Units in the Northeast to earn this distinction for the 2013-2014 School Year. Thisprestigious end of year award is earned based on sustained superior performance and points accumulated for events throughout the school year.

“Overall we had an extremely well balanced performance in the 2013-14 school year in all areas including Drill, Air Rifle, Academics, Community Service and Leadership Development,” said the Senior Naval Science Instructor Lieutenant Colonel Peter McCarthy, USMC (Ret.)

“Our senior cadets leaders did a fantastic job last year and kept the unit focused on achieving unit goals and performing well at the Area Manager’s Inspection. The cadets really pulled together and performed up to expectations last year. We are very excited to once again achieve this level of distinction.”

The Distinguished Unit Award gives Riverhead cadets a better chance at having more cadets awarded scholarships to the academies.

In the 2013-14 school year, Riverhead High School NJROTC Senior Chief (c/SCPO) Nicholas Deschamps received an early appointment to the Merchant Marine Academy (MMA) at Kings Point, NY, where he plans to pursue a degree in engineering.
