Riverhead Man Found Dead in Peconic River at Grangebel Park

The body was found on Tuesday evening.

A 34-year-old Riverhead man was found dead in the waters of the Peconic River at Grangebel Park in Riverhead on Tuesday evening, according to Riverhead Town Police.

Police responded to the park behind 57 West Main Street on a 911 report of a person in the water at 5:11 p.m.

Responding officers found a man face down in the water on the north side of the park near a footbridge, police said.

It was immediately apparent the man was dead and had been in the water for an undetermined amount of time, according to police.

The Riverhead Detective Division was notified and responded.

The Riverhead Dive Team responded and removed the body from the water.

The man was later identified as Victoriano Cohon-Garcia, police said.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to assist at the scene.

The body was removed and transported to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

At this time, the death does not appear to be criminal in nature, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
