Riverhead Man Says Group Attacked, Tried to Rob Him
Incident occurred early Saturday, police say.

Riverhead Town Police are investigating a report of an assault and attempted robbery in Riverhead early Saturday morning.
Police responded to Peconic Bay Medical Center after a 4:32 a.m. 911 call. Leonardo Lopez-Estrada, of Riverhead, told police that he was walking near his residence when he was struck in the head with an unknown blunt object, knocking him to the ground.
Lopez-Estrada says 3-4 men then attempted to remove a gold necklace from his neck. Lopez-Estrada was able to run away to a nearby friend’s residence on Parkway Street and was transported to PBMC for treatment.

The Riverhead Detective Division was notified and the incident is currently under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the described incident is requested to contact the Detective Division at 727-4500.
