Riverhead Police Department Bids Sad Farewell to K9 Comrade
You'll need your tissues: Riverhead Police Department's K9 Vaki died after suffering a severe neurological infection, police said.
RIVERHEAD, NY — The Riverhead Police Department is mourning the loss of its beloved canine companion.
In a release Tuesday, Riverhead Police said they regret to announce "the unfortunate passing of K9 Vaki," who has served the town for more than seven years.
During that time, Vaki and his handler, Riverhead Town Police Officer Jack Doscinski, have been credited with the recovery and apprehension of criminals and evidence in robbery, burglary and assault cases throughout the Town of Riverhead and the East End of Suffolk County, police said.

Most recently, Vaki assisted the East End Drug Task Force with the recovery of large quantities of narcotics and United States currency, police said.
"Unfortunately, Vaki suffered a severe neurological infection from which he could not recover," police said. "Through the K9 demonstrations and public interactions, Vaki has interacted with many members of our community and will be missed by all. The Riverhead Police Department would like to recognize Vaki for his years of service. He will be missed."
