Riverhead Under Wind Advisory, 50 MPH Gusts Possible

National Weather Service issues advisory for Wednesday.

Just a trace of snow, if any, but lots of rain and wind.

That’s the story Wednesday for the Riverhead. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the East End that goes into effect at 3 p.m. Wednesday and runs until 1 a.m. Thursday.

Winds between 20 and 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, will accompany rain through much of the day.

The strong winds have the potential to bring down large tree limbs and branches, as well as power lines, the NWS said in its advisory.

Here’s the detailed NWS forecast:

  • Today- Rain before 4pm, then rain, snow, and sleet. Temperature falling to around 34 by 5pm. Wind chill values between 20 and 30. Windy, with a northeast wind 16 to 21 mph increasing to 23 to 28 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 46 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Little or no snow and sleet accumulation expected.
  • Tonight- Rain, mainly before 3am. Low around 32. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Breezy, with a north wind 19 to 24 mph decreasing to 7 to 12 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 46 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Thanksgiving Day- A slight chance of rain and snow showers between 10am and 2pm, then a slight chance of rain showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 40. Wind chill values between 25 and 35. Northwest wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
  • Thursday Night- A chance of flurries. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 24. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. North wind around 8 mph.
