Southampton Kayaker Dies After Going Out On Bay With Dog: Police

After a frantic search for the man, who went out on the bay and never returned, he was found and died at the hospital, police say.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A missing kayaker from Southampton was found Sunday and later died, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, a call came in at 6:23 p.m. about John Jackman, 55, who went out kayaking on Shinnecock Bay with his dog but never returned. The dog returned without Jackman, and the search commenced.

The Southampton Fire Department located Jackman, who was rushed to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and later died, police said.

Southampton Town Police patrol units, community response units, and bay constables, and a Suffolk County Police Department aviation unit also responded to help in the search, police said.
