Scout Strives To Bring National Anthem To School Baseball Games

"This is the first time in Mercy's baseball history that the flag and National Anthem will be part of every baseball game."

RIVERHEAD, NY — One local Boy Scout is doing his best to do a good turn daily.

Riverhead resident Ethan Aube has launched a GoFundMe, "Ethan's Eagle Scout Project," which has raised $1,630 of its $4,000 goal so far.

Ethan said the funds are meant to help him purchase items needed for his Eagle Scout project.

The money will be utilized for a new flagpole at Bishop McGann-Mercy Diocesan High School's baseball field, a wireless sound system, paint, supplies, and materials for benches behind home plate for viewers and scorekeepers. Funds will also go toward reconditioning of both dugouts, he said.

"To honor our national pastime, McGann-Mercy High School and I will begin a tradition where the National Anthem will be played before each game," Ethan said. "This is the first time in Mercy's baseball history that the flag and National Anthem will be part of every baseball game."

Ethan, who attended the U.S. Air Force Academy Baseball Camp, said he was extremely impressed with Coach Mike Kazlausky's teachings regarding the proper etiquette and the respect that should be given toward the National Anthem.

"I want to bring this concept to our baseball athletes and visiting teams at every game," Ethan said.

He added, "As a student at Mercy, I recognize that taxpayer funds are not a luxury that the school is able to receive. Over the years as a Boy Scout, I have learned to give back to the community, and Mercy is my community. I believe my project will help other students who are not involved in Boy Scouts to see how our slogan, 'Do a Good Turn Daily,' can be applied to their lives, also."
