Thieves Attempt to Steal 2 Safes From Cooperage Inn: Police

The safes were found with contents intact; the foiled heist took place early Wednesday morning, police said.

BAITING HOLLOW, NY - Two thieves broke into the Cooperage Inn in Baiting Hollow early Wednesday morning and made off with two safes, police said.

According to Riverhead Police, the heist took place at 3:42 a.m., when police responded to a report of a commercial burglary occurring at the Cooperage Inn, located at 2218 Sound Avenue in Baiting Hollow.

Upon entering the restaurant, an employee discovered that an interior office had been broken into and that two safes had been removed, police said.

Responding officers located the safes elsewhere on the property and the contents of same appeared to be intact, police said.

Police believe the thieves may have been inside the building at the time the employee entered and they immediately fled the area, leaving the safes behind.
