LIRR Train Strikes Cars in Riverhead, 2 Reportedly Hospitalized
Accident occurred at the Mill Road crossing Thursday afternoon.

A Long Island Rail Road train struck two cars at the Mill Road crossing in Riverhead Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
The MTA said it had no reports of any injuries among the five people who were in both cars, but the Riverhead-News Review, citing a Riverhead Town police source, reported that two people have been taken to the hospital. The report says one of the two injured was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
None of the 15 passengers on board the 12:58 p.m. train from Greenport were injured, authorities said. The train left the Riverhead station, east of the accident scene, at about 1:37 p.m and was due in Ronkonkoma at 2:22 p.m.

Witnesses on the scene told RiverheadLOCAL that an SUV stopped at the crossing gate was rear-ended by another vehicle, sending both vehicles onto the tracks as the train approached.
