Two Hospitalized After Wrong-Way Crash in Calverton

A 19-year-old driving eastbound on Route 25 veered into the westbound lane and hit two cars, police say.

Two people were hospitalized after an accident near Calverton National Cemetery on Tuesday evening, according to Riverhead Town Police.

Police responded to Route 25/Middle Country Road for a report of a car accident with injuries, police said.

Upon initial investigation it appears Charles A. Cali, 19, of Calverton, was driving a Toyota Camry eastbound on Route 25 when he veered into the westbound lane and hit a Chevy Pickup driven by Shawn K. Caffrey, 44, of Miller Place, police said.

Cali continued driving eastbound in the westbound lane and hit a Kia Optima, driven by Sheryl A. Mullins 48, of Miller Place, head-on, according to police.

The Wading River Fire Department responded and extricated both Cali and Mullins from their cars, according to police.

Cali and Mullins were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital and are listed in serious but stable condition, police said.
