Valentine's Day Road Rage on Sunrise Highway

BREAKING: There wasn't much love on Sunrise Highway Tuesday afternoon.

There was no Valentine's Day love on Sunrise Highway Tuesday afternoon when police say a man punched another driver in the face during a road rage incident.

Michael J. Cavilla, 60, was driving a 2014 Dodge Ram pickup truck westbound when he cut off a Hyundai Accent just prior to exiting onto the Exit 62 off-ramp in Eastport, according to State Police.

As both vehicles were traveling on the the two-lane ramp, the Dodge struck the Hyundai from behind, police said. The collision pushed the Hyundai off the exit ramp and it became stuck on the snow covered shoulder, police said.

After the crash, Cavilla, of Bridgehampton, approached the Hyundai and initiated a verbal altercation with its driver, police said. The altercation turned physical and Cavilla punched the driver of the Hyundai in the face, causing injury, police said.

Police did not release any information on the driver of the Hyundai.

Cavilla is charged with third degree assault and second degree reckless endangerment. He was given an appearance ticket returnable to Southampton Town Justice Court on March 8.
