Woman, 84, Dies After Rollover Crash On LIE Exit Ramp: Police

The driver was arrested after he was found to be operating the vehicle without an interlock device, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — An 84-year-old woman died after a rollover crash on July 4 on a Long Island Expressway exit ramp, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, the crash took place at about 1 p.m. on the eastbound ramp to Route 58 in Riverhead. The vehicle left the roadway, rolling over several times, police said.

The driver, Jhon M. Pulla Idrovo, 45, from Queens, was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps for treatment of minor injuries; he was subsequently arrested and charged with driving without an interlock device, police said.

Two additional passengers were transported to PBMC by EMTs for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

A third passenger, Maria B Tixi Tixi, 84, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by a Suffolk County Police aviation helicopter; she died while at the hospital, police said.

The Riverhead Town Police Department's detective division as well as the New York State Police Department's reconstruction team responded to the scene for further investigation; the vehicle was impounded pending a safe check, police said.
