Woman Charged With Leaving 2 Dogs In Hot Car On Long Island: Police

The car was not running and the windows were closed, police say.

MANORVILLE, NY — A Queens woman was arrested and charged with leaving two dogs in a blisteringly hot car in Manorville Thursday, police said.

According to Suffolk County Police, the incident took place at 11:30 a.m. in a parking lot on County Road 111. Temperatures were more than 80 degrees and rose to 90 degrees Thursday.

Two dogs were left unattended in a 2010 Acura MDX that was not running with the windows closed; a person saw the dogs in the vehicle and called 911, police said.

Seventh Precinct officers responded as well as a paramedic from Manorville Community Ambulance; the paramedic broke the window and removed the dogs from the vehicle, police said. The dogs, a 3-year-old female Labrador named Princess and an 8-year-old male Bichon Poodle named Ridgley, were unharmed, police said.

The driver of the vehicle, Maria Chojncka, 60, of Middle Village, who was taking care of the dogs for their owner, was charged with two counts of confinement of companion animal in vehicle: extreme temps, police said.

She was issued a field appearance ticket and scheduled for arraignment at a later date; the owner was notified, police said.
