Wrong Way Drunk Driver Caught With Open Beers In Car: Cops

The Riverhead man was nabbed on Saturday in Riverside, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A wrong way driver with empty and half-drunk beer cans in his car was nabbed Saturday, police said.

According to New York State Police, on Saturday at 2:25 a.m., 36-year old Edgar Chitay-Culajay of Riverhead was stopped on Riverleigh Avenue after he was seen driving north in the southbound lane.

He was removed from the vehicle and authorities found numerous empty and half drunk, open beer cans inside, police said.

Chitay-Culajay was unsteady on his feet, slurred his speech and had the strong odor of an alcohol beverage emanating from his breath, police said.

Chitay-Culajay's performance on standardized field sobriety tests indicated that he was intoxicated by alcohol and he was placed under arrest, police said.

He was transported back to New York Police Barracks Riverside where he provided a breath sample of .12% blood alcohol content, police said. Chitay-Culajay was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, processed, and is due back in Southampton Justice Court on Dec. 18, police said.
