53-Year-Old Charged With Fatally Stabbing 78-Year-Old Brother-In-Law

Police found the victim stabbed in the chest outside of an apartment, and the suspect stabbed in the chest inside of the apartment.

YONKERS, NY — A family dispute in Westchester has left one man dead and another behind bars.

The Yonkers Police Department says that on Saturday, around 1:30 p.m., officers responded to an apartment inside 760 Bronx River Road, after a report of a stabbing.

At the scene, police found a man with a stab wound to his chest, at the entrance to an apartment inside the building. He told police that he had been stabbed in the chest by his brother-in-law.

When officers entered the apartment, they found a second man lying unresponsive in bed with a stab wound to the chest.

Police administered first aid and rushed both men to the hospital.

Major Case Squad detectives, along with the Digital Forensics and Crime Scene Units, headed to the scene and started an investigation.

Investigators believe the victim and suspect were alone in the apartment at the time of the incident, during which both received stab wounds to the chest.

The suspect received treatment for his injury, while the victim later died from his injuries at the hospital.

"This tragedy is a stark reminder that domestic violence can shatter lives at any time, even as we approach what should be a season of peace and togetherness," Commissioner Chris Sapienza said. "Our hearts go out to the victim's family and friends as they grieve this profound loss. We are committed to holding the perpetrator accountable and supporting those affected by this senseless act."

53-year-old John Singh, a resident of Bronx River Road in Yonkers, was arraigned on one count of felony second degree murder. He is expected to be remanded to the Westchester County Jail, pending release from the hospital.

The victim has been identified as 78-year-old Bernard Barua, of Yonkers.

The City of Yonkers and the Yonkers Police Department said they offer their sincere condolences to Barua's family and friends.
