Almost Time for Alive-at-The-Met-Opera-in-HD in Movie Theaters World-wide!

We in Westchester are so lucky to be among the "chosen" to catch the operas at the new Thurs-matinees as well as the usual Weds-eve encores.

For the first time, the highly successful Live-at-the-Met-in-HD opera season is offering additional matinee performances on Thursdays, following the initial live opera transmission on Saturdays. This is in addition to the usual Wednesday evening encores.

These Thursday matinees all start at 1:00 PM but are only available in select movie venues. Our local WP City Center and NewRoc are among this privileged group.

Obviously it all is happening because of the ever increasing popularity of the opera transmissions and the fact that, around here, they are mostly sold out.

Around the globe they are now shown in 70 countries, available in over 2000 movie houses. And the Met now is not the only opera house offering the HDs. The Royal Opera at Covent Garden is transmitting its own, for instance.

Along with Mark Twain, opera can say that the report of its demise was highly exaggerated. But we have to admit -- unhappily -- that all serious music is indeed endangered. The falling attendance, and immense expense of maintaining a full orchestra, has closed a number of symphonic halls across the nation.

But with all the evident enthusiasm for opera, no one can say this genre is moribund. Admittedly not too many new operas find their way to production. The warhorses, however, are sure-fire hits, especially when cast with the outstanding singers around these days.

So come, enjoy what is being offered in HD:

All Saturday “Live” matinees in the East start at 12:55 PM, unless especially noted. All Wednesday evening Encores, start at 6:30 PM. All Thursday matinee Encores start at 1:00 PM.
