Armed 17-Year-Old Shot Trying To Carjack Off-Duty State Trooper At Gas Station: Police

YONKERS, NY — A teenager picked the wrong person to try to carjack, according to police.

The Yonkers Police Department says that on Sunday, around 12:45 p.m., they received a call from an off-duty New York State trooper, assigned to New York City, requesting assistance at the Mobil gas station on Kimball Avenue.

The trooper told Yonkers police that she had shot a male suspect who had attempted to stab her.

Investigators say the off-duty trooper had been filling her vehicle up with gas. After she finished refueling, the teenage suspect approached her, pulled out a knife, and entered the driver's seat of her vehicle.

The trooper then fired one shot from her off-duty firearm, striking the suspect in the left arm, according to police. The round then continued into his torso.

The suspect accelerated the vehicle toward the back of the gas station, driving through a shed and fence, before stopping in the parking lot of an apartment building next door, on Midland Avenue, according to YPD.

The suspect then fled the scene, running toward Midland Avenue.

Yonkers Police Department officers quickly found the suspect at the entrance to the apartment building. Police say a knife was recovered from the suspect at the time of arrest.

Medical aid was administered at the scene, and the suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and remains in stable condition.

The 17-year-old resident of Yonkers is still awaiting arraignment, but will be charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree robbery, third-degree robbery, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and second-degree menacing, according to cops.

Yonkers police say that the criminal investigation is being led by the Detective Division Major Case Squad, while an internal review is being conducted by the NYS Police.
