The Hastings school community is pleased to announce that the Board of Education has appointed Ms. Karina Villalona as the new Assistant Director for Special Education, effective July 1, 2026.
Selected through a highly competitive search process, Ms. Villalona will join the incoming Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services’ team and will work in collaboration with Ms. MariAngela Sanchez, Assistant Director for Special Education.
Ms. Villalona is a longtime Hastings resident and a parent.
“This opportunity is especially meaningful because Hastings is not only the community I will now serve professionally—it is also the community my family calls home. As the parent of a Hastings graduate and current rising seniors, I have had the privilege of experiencing firsthand the supportive and dedicated environment that makes this district so special. My children have been both challenged and inspired by exceptional teachers, and I am deeply grateful for those experiences,” said Ms. Villalona.
Her familiarity with the district, combined with her respect for others, positions her to contribute meaningfully to the continued strengthening of student-driven learning environments across the district.
“With nearly 30 years in education—as a teacher, school psychologist, and administrator—I bring a strong commitment to creating an inclusive and encouraging environment for all learners. I am particularly passionate about special education and ensuring that every student has access to a meaningful and individualized educational experience,” said Ms. Villalona.
Ms. Villalona demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the importance of inclusive educational systems and the critical connections among general education, special education, ENL services, and student support structures. She possesses strong knowledge of disproportionality in special education and recognizes the importance of equitable practices and outcomes for all students.
“Ms. Villalona brings extensive experience in leading special education initiatives and a thoughtful perspective shaped by her background in school psychology,” said Ms. Holder. “Her expertise, compassion, and commitment to inclusive problem-solving will be a tremendous asset to the Hastings community.”
Hastings UFSD is proud to welcome Ms. Villalona into this important leadership role and looks forward to what she will bring to the Hastings school community.
