IRVINGTON, NY — Irvington residents are being urged to stay alert after the village received several reports of increased coyote activity, including two sightings near Irvington schools.

In both school-area incidents, Irvington Police Department officers responded with Greenburgh Animal Control. The coyotes were seen running into nearby wooded areas, according to the village.

Based on the observations reported, the animals appeared to be acting normally and did not show signs of illness or aggressive behavior. The notice serves as a reminder for residents who may encounter coyotes in neighborhoods, near yards or along wooded edges common in the area. Village officials encouraged people to remain vigilant and to keep a close watch on pets when they are outside.

Residents are also being asked to report coyote sightings to the Irvington Police Department at 914-591-8080.

For residents looking for more guidance, the village pointed people to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for coyote safety information and prevention tips. That state guidance offers additional information on what to do if a coyote is seen and how to reduce the chances of attracting one to residential areas.
