"When people think about safety in a city, their minds probably immediately go to things like the crime rate, auto fatality rate or risk of natural disasters," Chip Lupo, WalletHub analyst, said. "The safest cities in America protect residents from these threats of bodily harm and property damage, but on top of that, they also help secure people's financial safety. Financial safety includes things like minimizing the risk of fraud and identity theft, keeping the population employed and insured, and combating homelessness."

To determine where Americans can feel most protected against life's hazards, including nonphysical forms of danger, WalletHub more than 180 U.S. cities across 41 key metrics. The data set ranges from traffic fatalities per capita and assaults per capita to the unemployment rate and the percentage of the population that is uninsured.

Here's how the Hudson Valley's safest city stacked up.

Safest Cities in America

  1. Juneau, AK
  2. Warwick, RI
  3. Overland Park, KS
  4. Burlington, VT
  5. South Burlington, VT
  6. Virginia Beach, VA
  7. Cedar Rapids, IA
  8. Casper, WY
  9. Boise, ID
  10. Yonkers, NY

While Yonkers was rated the No. 10 safest city in America overall, it was considered the No. 3 city in terms of home and community safety, the No. 59 city for natural disaster risk and the No. 108 city for financial safety.

Other New York State cities on the list include: Rochester at No. 66, NYC at No. 133, and Buffalo at No. 138.

The full report with the methodology used and all other U.S. cities that made the list can be found here.
