Bicycle Sundays begin again this Sunday for 51st year!!!
I proposed the closing of the parkway 51 years ago! Thrilled the recreation activity continues
Bicycle Sundays --this Sunday!---Our 51st year! (calendar below)
51 years ago I proposed that the county close the Bronx River Parkway for cyclists. Bicycle Sundays continues to be one of the most popular recreation programs in Westchester!
51 years ago I was appointed by former Westchester County Executive Al Del Bello to his Bikeway Committee. I previously served as chair of the Task Force for Bikeways in Westchester and successfully persuaded the Board of Legislators to approve the first bikeway in Westchester --along the Bronx River Parkway (a bikeway that is enjoyed by many residents today!). Today there are other bike paths in Westchester - including the former South County/North County trail (named for Andy O'Rourke, former County Executive). Cyclists can bike from the Bronx all the way to Putnam County. The town is applying for a grant to connect that bikeway to the Mario Cuomo bridge. The bike lane would be along Route 119. If and when that happens cyclists will be able to bike from the Bronx or Putnam all the way to Rockland without cycling on a busy road.
I proposed 51 years ago that the county close the Parkway on Sundays during the spring, summer and fall months to cyclists. I got the idea from former Mayor of NYC John Lindsay who had closed Central Park for cyclists. County Executive Del Bello loved the idea. I'm proud of that accomplishment and thrilled that Westchester County continues offering cyclists, joggers, walkers, scooters this fun activity.
Bicycle Sundays begin this Sunday. The calendar is below.
