Mercy College and Community Come Together for Relay for Life Event

Relay for Life kicked off with a survivor reception honoring cancer survivors from the College and local community.

What were more than 200 Mercy College students doing on a recent Friday night into the wee hours of Saturday morning?  Raising more than $21,000 to help fight cancer with the annual Relay For Life of Mercy College event.

The event kicked off with a survivor reception honoring cancer survivors from the College and local community.  One Mercy College student who spoke delivered
a thoughtful speech about her battle with cancer at the age of three and her survival.

Alexandria Germes, a first-year student, Cybersecurity major and captain of Relay’s GLOW UP Team, spoke about being a caregiver during opening ceremonies and said, “Relay was truly an awe-inspiring experience.  I’m honored to have been a part of such a powerful event and cannot wait to do it again.”

Every year, Mercy College hosts Relay for Life, an event sponsored by the American Cancer Society.  This year’s event consisted of 29 teams and 254 registered participants from students and staff.  Held in Victory Gym from April 6 at 6:00 p.m. to April 7 at 6:00 a.m, teams stayed awake for 12 hours and spent the time fundraising, walking and encouraging the fight against cancer.

Junior Stephanie Rodriguez, a Behavioral Science/Education major, captain of the Avengers For Life team and logistics chair of the event, stated, “Relay was extremely successful!  I appreciate the school coming together and can’t wait to do it next year!”
