War Words: A Slam Poetry Event at the Hudson River Museum on July 8

On Sunday, July 8, writers will read war-themed poems at the Hudson River Museum’s Slam Poetry event War Words. The event, cosponsored by the Hudson River Museum and the Hudson Valley Writer’s Center, Sleepy Hollow, is FREE with Museum admission.

Inspired by the Museum’s current exhibition Westchester Women & War: Portraits, (http://www.hrm.org/exhibits/WACS/wacs.html) the event begins at 1 pm with a tour of the exhibition, a commemorative collection of pastel and oil portraits of World War II women veterans and photographs of Westchester women soldiers today. The tour is led by curator Laura Vookles. Westchester Poetry SlamMaster Eric ZORK Alan leads the readings at 2 pm. Readers were selected from participants in two June writing workshops at the Museum and the Hudson Valley Writer’s Center.  The writers share their own poems that range from expressions of patriotism, courage and fear to memorials of pain and loss. Slam poetry offers tools of verbal expression and performance to help poets deal with powerful, complicated subjects like war and grief.
