Wayfinders on the Hudson

Amidst rising concerns over youth mental health and screen time, Wayfinders on the Hudson is launching its new season of immersive nature connection and social-emotional learning (SEL) programs at the Lenoir Nature Preserve in Yonkers, NY.

Serving students in grades 1-8, Wayfinders’ Base Camp afterschool program offers hands-on outdoor experiences that promote SEL, leadership development, and community building.

“We are providing a space where kids can be kids—running, exploring, and building community in a natural setting,” said Gwen Merkin, Co-Founder of Wayfinders on the Hudson. “By integrating SEL with nature education, we aren't just teaching kids about trees; we're helping them grow into resilient, empathetic, and confident individuals.”

Key highlights of the program include:
● Nature-Based SEL: The Wayfinders curriculum focuses on nature, fun, and play as teachers. Through nature-based activities encouraging exploration and creativity, students play an active role in learning about the environment, themselves, and community.
● Teachers and Peers as Mentors: Experienced educators guide safe and engaging sessions that reinforce SEL and environmental awareness. Students also learn from one another through mixed-age cohorts that encourage community building and personal growth.
● Exceptional Location: Located at Lenoir Nature Preserve in Yonkers, Wayfinders utilizes and appreciates Lenoir’s beautiful woodland forest, trails, and field habitats.

The upcoming session, running from April 14th to June 18th (10 sessions, 3:45-5:45 pm), provides a structured after-school alternative that connects children with the Hudson Valley's natural environment. This Spring season will feature an opportunity for students to explore our local ecosystem through plant identification as part of a restoration project at the Preserve!
