College Roundup: Oct. 1-7

SPOTLIGHT ON : TRAVIS BLAIR        

 For the second time this Fall season, Travis Blair of Hastings and Wheaton College takes the spotlight, due to his leadership of the Lyons throughout the first 13 games. On the 7th, in a game with Husson, he scored the first 2 goals, with the first coming at the 9:29 mark, and the second at 53.45 . Two teammates later scored the other goals in the 4-0 triumph. His team high statistics include 6 goals, 14 points, 3 game winning scores, and a total of 40 shots, double that of any other member of the team. The record stands at 7-4-2, and 1-1-2 in the  .E.W.M.A.C. Conference.

 Hannah Wilson of Irvington and the  Clark Cougars' women's soccer team, scored her first goal of the seson in a 7-0 blanking of Elms College on the 4th, as she tallied it at 71:51 of the game. The score came when she took a through ball from a teammate and outraced the Blazer defense before putting a shot in the upper right hand corner.

 Will Abbott played in Hobart's 2-1 win over Ithaca on the 2nd, while at St. Lawrence on the 6th, he started on the wing in the 3-0 loss to the Saints.

 In a 3-0 blanking of Occidental on the 3rd, Becca Bortz of Chapman scored the middle goal at 40:24, her 5th goal of the season, while in a 5-0 blanking of Whittier on the 6th, the starting forward had her 6th goal so far, unassisted at 48.27 . In another home contest with UC-Santa Cruz on the 7th, and with her role as a starter now established, Bortz assisted on the winning goal at 97:21 of overtime, with the record now 9-4

 In another great field hockey performance, Salve Regina's Lisa Bucci continued her assaults on the foes' cages, as in an 8-1 win over Regis, she had 6 shots, with 4 on goal, with 2 denting the twine, plus 2 assists in the rout. She assisted in the 2nd goal, at 13:87, scored goal number 4 at 31:27, number 6, unassisted, at 37:14, and had her 2nd assist at 51.21 in the game. With the University of New England as the guests on the 6th, she assisted on the 2nd goal at the 47.14 mark, and which proved to be the winner. The opposition scored their one and only tally at 55:55. The record stands at 7-4:2-2,

 After two losses , the Bowdoin Polars topped the Tufts Jumbos on the 6th, 17-10, with Brian Glazewski contributing 3 solo and 4 tackling assists in the win, in addition to breaking up one pass attempt.

 After four straight victories, the Ithaca Bombers met their match on the 6th, as the visiting Saxons of Alfred took their  measure, 31-7, with Sklar Griffenberg of the hosts having 2 solo and 4 assisting tackles in the loss.

 In a 53-14 loss to visiting Trinity on the 6th, Garrett Hoy did all the kicking and punting for his Hamilton eleven, and booted both extra points after each of their touchdowns.

 Nicole Hardesty of the Vermont Catamounts women's soccer team, in a game with New Hampshire, played off the bench in the 2-1 loss, with the record now 2-11-0 and 1-3-0 in the America East Conference.

 In a swim meet at Division I U. of Missouri on the 5th, Lena Trager had her first taste of intense competition on the college level,  as her Washington of St. Louis squad tied for 5th place in the meet. She swam in the 200 Medley Relay , with her foursome finishing 16th, and with a time of 1:56.70 . In the 200 Individual Medley, Lena was 24th, and clocked at 2:19.8, while her 200 Freestyle Relay quartet was 15th, clocked at 1:13.44. In the 100 Breaststroke, she finished 23rd, with her time of 1:13.44 .The team finished with 214.5 points, as they tied for 5th place with Lindenwood U. of St. Charles, Mo.

 At Virginia Wesleyan on the 5th , Devon Huddelston of Roanoke College opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 8:37, as she zeroed in from the left flank and netted her 5 yard slam. The final score had her field hockey squad on top, 5-1.

 In an away game at Hood College of Frederick, Md. on the 6th, Alexis LoRusso of Albright had 9:26 minutes of playing time in the nets . She had no shots directed toward her goal in that time, as her team won the game , 3-1 , and which now sports a record of 2-9-0:0-3-0 .

 The Hobart Statesmen continued their unbeaten streak, with the record now at 6-0:3-0, following their conquest of Springfield at home on the 6th, as starting left tackle Ali Marpet and his teammates romped over the Pride, who are now 3-3 on the season .Jaron Hickman of Ardsley also saw some action for the visitors in the ball game .

 At a cross country race a tWestfield State on the 6th, Joanna Mumbey of Johnson & Wales was one of 453 runners competing in the meet . She finished 196th, with a clocking of 26:35.12. Her team finished 20th of the 43 teams entered, with 599 points.

 In an 8-1 loss to Vassar on the 3rd, Chelsea Michaelis and her Bard doubles partner dropped their doubles match, 8-1,with the record now 7-4.

 At N.Y.U on the 6th, two Rivertowns soccer players, namely midfielders and Hastings residents Nick Pastore of Rochester and Mac Yumoto of the host school, played to a hard fought and scoreless two overtime tie on the 6th.

 Two Rivertowns cross country runners - Julian Saliani and Abby Flock, with both from Irvington, represented Johns Hopkins at the Pre-National meet In Terre Haute, Indiana on the 6th, with Saliani finishing 25th in his race, and clocked at 26:12, as the Blue Jays were 4th of 30 teams entered, with a score of 166 on the day. In the women's race, Flock was 669th, with a time of 23:25, with her squad finishing on top in the meet.

 Running for Dickinson College in the Carnegie-Mellon Invitational cross country meet on the 6th, Emma Sanderfinished 160th of the 199 contestants, with a time of 23:45.9, as her Red Devils harriers finished 3rd of 18 schools competing.

 On the 6th, Tom Spenser had his first win of the season as goal tender for the Rhode Island Rams, as he had a shutout going until the final 6 seconds, when he was bested on a penalty shot by a UMass player , with the final score 3-1. The record stands at 2-6-2 overall , and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

 In another fine performance for Mt. Holyoke, Emma Sweeting had 3 spikes, a team high of 5 kill , 6 digs, 2 base serves, and a team high of 7.0 points in their 3-0 loss to Springfield. With Smith at a Bryn Mawr tournament on the 6th, the Lyons lost to the former ,3-0, as she had 5 kills, 7 digs, and 6 points in this one. The record is now 3-9:0-5.

 In a 3-1 loss at home with Maine, Sophie Sylla of Binghamton saw some playing time in the game, with the Bearcats' record now 6-7-1 overall, and 0-4-1 In the American East Conference.
