County Announces Agreement with Dobbs Ferry to Advance Waterfront Park Restoration

There will be a press conference Tuesday to discuss further plans for the stabilization and development of Waterfront Park.

Westchester County announced yesterday that plans to develop the RiverWalk trailway in Dobbs Ferry—in conjunction with a $6-7 million waterfront stabilization and revitalization project—may soon be under way.

Dobbs Ferry Mayor Hartley Connett, County Executive Robert Astorino and County Legislator Tom Abinanti will host a press conference on Tuesday at Half Moon Restaurant to discuss plans for the half-mile RiverWalk segment that will connect with the county's planned 51-mile pedestrian trail, wending its way along the Hudson River from Manhattan all the way up to the Putnam County line.

"Piece by piece, we are expanding RiverWalk, which will be a magnificent trailway for our residents," said Astorino in a statement released by the county. "This park redevelopment in Dobbs Ferry will add a new segment and help the village not only stabilize but also enhance its waterfront."

In addition to funds procured from the county, the village has pledged to bond up to $1 million for shore stabilization, The New York Department of State has granted $2 million for shore stabilization and local philanthropist and Dobbs Ferry resident Marie McKellar has pledged to donate $1 million—with an additional $500,000, if the village can match it in private donation—to assure the project comes to fruition.

Not only will the revamped park include a scenic walking trail, but also: children's playgrounds, picnic areas, a performance stage, comfort station, a kayak launch area and a lawn for games or relaxing.

Understanding that the shoreline in Dobbs Ferry is a risk for erosion and possible collapse, the village must also undertake a costly shoreline stabilization project.

Though residents are thrilled about the renewed opportunity to enjoy the village's rare views, County Legislator Tom Abinanti has also pointed out the potential for job stimulation as a result of the construction work.

"The county's grant will save Dobbs Ferry's waterfront park from significant deterioration and provide jobs and a much needed boost to the local economy," he said.

The news conference will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 7 at Half Moon restaurant adjacent to Waterfront Park.
