Demolition of 2nd half of Ardsley Road bridge to start Thursday

Took NYS DOT contractors five years to repair first half of the bridge. Why?

DEMOLITION OF SECOND HALF OF ARDSLEY ROAD BRIDGE TO BEGIN 3/6/2025
FIRST HALF OF BRIDGE TO BE RE- OPENED THIS COMING WEEK AFTER FIVE YEARS OF CONSTRUCTION WORK

It’s been about 5 years since NYS contractors started work trying to repair the Ardsley Road bridge connecting Ardsley and the River villages of Greenburgh to Central Ave, Edgemont, and Scarsdale. Half of the bridge has been closed to motorists during the past five years.
Finally ---the first half of the bridge will be re-opened to motorists this coming week. And work on the 2nd half of the bridge should begin on Thursday when the demolition begins. In the coming months motorists will continue to be able to use only half the bridge.
I have written to the NYS Department of Transportation and to other officials and asked them why it took five years to complete repairs on ONLY HALF OF THE BRIDGE. Demolishing the Tappan Zee Bridge and replacing that bridge with the Mario Cuomo bridge was quicker! I have not received any explanation. Many residents complained to me during the past five years that they frequently did not see any workers doing any work on the bridge for months. It would be interesting to learn if there were cost overruns on the bridge project, how much were the overruns or if the problem was with the contractor. A short bridge should not take longer to repair than a major bridge or a trip from Earth to Mars.
I was advised that the 2nd half of the bridge reconstruction which should start this week should be completed much sooner.

FROM NYS DOT…
Mr. Feiner,

Just wanted to give you a quick update on the project.

  • The contractor anticipates switching traffic along Ardsley Rd on 03/04/25. Followed by the demolition of the Stage 2 side of the bridge beginning 03/06/25 and will be performed during the nighttime hours 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, this is expected to continue until 03/14/25 ( not including the weekend).
  • The Portable Variable Message Signs have been activated to reflect the start of the nightwork.

Please note, the contractor is performing its work in a manner as to minimize any impact to the public and the number of open travel lanes will remain the same as prior to the start of construction.
