Dows Lane Elementary School Marks 100th Day Of School Year

Using their math skills was a part of the celebration.

IRVINGTON, NY — Dows Lane Elementary School students in kindergarten through third grade recognized the 100th day of school on Feb. 15.

They celebrated how much they’ve grown and learned since September by using the number 100 in a variety of hands-on activities, according to a district spokesman.

“The 100th day is a fun opportunity for all students to learn about place value, which is part of our math curriculum,” said first-grade teacher Laurel Warager, whose students celebrated the milestone by dressing as centenarians. “We had fun all day long.”

Students in all first-grade classes donned eyeglasses, white hair, wore suspenders, leaned on walking canes or sported grey beards as they read stories together and sorted 10 pieces of 10 different snacks. Principal Deborah Mariniello also dressed as a centenarian to join the students in the 100th day of school celebration.

Throughout the day, other students solved puzzles, counted by 10s up to 100, made necklaces, drew illustrations with 100 items and completed gumball graphing, in which they used different colors to chart 100 dots representing gumballs.

Besides having fun on their 100th day of school, the students gained a better understanding of math through the activities.
