Updated: Elderly Irvington Resident in Critical Condition After House Fire

Police and fire officials are investigating the cause.

Eighty-three-year-old Angelina Smercak was badly burned in her home at 32 Hudson Lane in Irvington Friday morning.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Westchester County Cause and Origin Team; police said the most significant damage to the small white house was contained to the kitchen and adjacent bathroom.

"She called 911 herself," said Irvington Police Chief Michael Cerone. "She was transported to the Westchester County Medical Center's burn unit in critical condition."

Cerone said she had suffered burns on more than 50 percent of her body.

Members of the Irvington fire and police departments responded, extinguishing the blaze and investigating what had ignited it.

According to police, there was no significant structural damage.

Neighbors who were home at the time said they didn't even know the incident had occurred until the fire trucks arrived on their otherwise quiet narrow street.
