Greenburgh to Receive Award from Arc of Westchester

The Town of Greenburgh will be given the Civic Partnership Award by the Arc of Westchester at the group’s 27th Annual Employer Recognition Breakfast on Friday, April 17.

In the fall of 2014, the Town of Greenburgh, awarded eDocNY, a social enterprise founded and supported by Arc of Westchester, with a contract to scan and index planning, zoning, and town board case files. This undertaking utilizes 12 individuals, eight of whom have disabilities. The creation of digital image copies of the files will enable the town to retrieve the records more efficiently for their constituents and preserve the historic integrity of the documents for decades ahead. The award acknowledges the town’s recognition of eDoc NY’s expertise and faith in the competence of its employees.

Arc of Westchester, which serves children, teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, works closely with 250 Westchester County businesses, government agencies and nonprofits to help identify productivity gaps in their workplaces, then provide them with individuals who have the skills to meet those needs. The career and employment programs work: 90 percent of young adults in Arc of Westchester’s programs participate in the labor force as productive members of the community, compared to just 20 percent of young adults nationwide.

“Our objective is for each individual to become a thriving citizen in the community, participating in all aspects of community life – from working to shopping to voting,” said Ric Swierat, Executive Director of Arc of Westchester, in a statement. “The first step is employment. We rely on our strong partnerships within the business community to secure meaningful jobs for these individuals. The value of a person’s life begins with what they do and who they work with. Once that is established, they will happily enjoy friendships and relationships – key elements to a successful life.”

Town Supervisor Paul Feiner will accept the award on behalf of the town.

Last year, Arc of Westchester placed 50 new individuals in paid community-based employment positions. This year, as current employment partners expand their programs and new employers become partners, Arc of Westchester will place even more individuals in meaningful jobs throughout Westchester County. There are currently 350 individuals employed through Arc of Westchester’s employment partner network.
