Talk Description: Dr. Lerner’s talk will draw from his most recent book “The Good Doctor: A Father, a Son, and the Evolution of Medical Ethics.” Dr. Lerner’s book has received high praise from such notables as Siddhartha Mukherjee, author of The Emperor of All Maladies, who describes Lerner’s “marvelous book” as “a deeply intimate story about his father and the practice of medicine [which] touches on some of the most profound issues in medicine today: autonomy, medical wisdom, empathy, paternalism and the evolving roles of the doctor and patient.”

Speaker Bio: Barron H. Lerner is a Hastings resident and father of two recent Hastings High School
graduates. A Professor of Medicine and Population Health at the New York University School of
Medicine. Dr. Lerner received his M.D. in 1986 and his Ph.D. in history in 1996. Dr. Lerner has authored
several books, including The Breast Cancer Wars: Hope, Fear and the Pursuit of a Cure in TwentiethCentury
America, named one of the 26 most notable books of 2001 by the American Library Association.
Dr. Lerner has published extensively in scholarly journals and contributes essays to the Science Times
section of The New York Times, the Times’ “Well” blog, Slate, Atlantic.com and The Huffington Post. He
has also appeared on numerous NPR broadcasts, including “Fresh Air,” “All Things Considered” and
“Science Friday.”

Background to Lecture Series: This lecture series honors Robert Tucker, a long time Hastings Social
Studies teacher and Hastings resident who passed away in September of 2008. Bob taught in the High
School for almost forty years. He was known for his rigorous classroom, passionate defense of civil
liberties and commitment to the Hastings students and the community at large. Bob taught American
History, Economics and Anthropology. He also founded and served as the advisor to WESTMUNC, the
highly attended, annual Model UN conference for Westchester. In addition, he served as Social Studies
Department Chair and President of the Hastings Teachers’ Association. This lecture series reflects Bob’s love of intellectual discourse and his belief in the ability of public education to bring a community together.
