Maisonette, A Home Decor Shop, Opens in Hastings
The new shop's furniture and home accents brings a new light to Warburton.
Maria Churchill, co-owner of Maisonette—the newest shop to open on Warburton Avenue in Hastings—said she loves to give furniture a second chance.
"Sometimes a chair with great lines can have an unfortunate fabric," Churchill said. "It's begging to be transformed."
Maisonette is Churchill and her husband Kevin McCarthy's first shop; both come from creative backgrounds—Churchill in design for print advertisements and McCarthy in lighting design for television.

"Because of our backgrounds, we can both make decisions about decorating very quickly," Churchill said. "We both know what we like and what goes well together."
Maisonette is filled both with larger pieces—such as upholstered chairs—and many smaller accent pieces like brightly-colored pillows, vases and mirrors.

"We know that nobody can throw out everything and start from scratch," Churchill said. "Our idea is that smaller punctuation pieces can bring a space together."
McCarthy and Churchill's idea in starting the store was to "surround themselves with things [they] love," McCarthy said.
They chose Hastings as the location for their first store because of its welcoming feel and artistic community.
"We decided to this because, even though neither of us were interior designers, so many people came to our house and said it looked professionally decorated," McCarthy said.
Churchill added: "Even if you have toys strewn about your living room and newspapers on the coffee table, it will still look great if it's decorated in a way that reflects who you are."
