Irvington District Welcomes Students For 2018-19 School Year

Students were ready to learn, grow and seek new academic opportunities as they got to their new classrooms.

IRVINGTON, NY —Equipped with new backpacks and school supplies, more than 1,750 students from the Irvington Union Free School District reported to the first day of school Sept. 4. Warmly greeted by their teachers and administrators, they were ready to learn, grow and seek new academic opportunities as they entered their classrooms.

“The faculty, staff and administration were thrilled to welcome our students to the new school year,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kristopher Harrison said. “Despite some first-day jitters, it was rewarding to see our students dig right into learning. I want to thank all of our faculty and staff for the preparation and hard work that shaped an amazing first day.”

Teachers at Dows Lane Elementary School helped ease the transition back to school by engaging their young students in a variety of activities. They helped them organize their school supplies, get to know new friends and read together Judith Viorst’s “The First Day of School” poem. At Main Street School, the teachers greeted their students with smiles and guided them through their expectations for the year.

Meanwhile, teachers at the middle and high school also warmly welcomed back students. Irvington High School students jumped in with a regular full day of classes on the first day of school, while the halls at Irvington Middle School were buzzing with chatter as eighth-graders teamed up with sixth-graders for various first-day-of-school activities, designed to help the younger students make a smooth transition into their new school.
