Irvington High School Sends Seniors Off With Appreciation

The students will head off to four-week internships.

IRVINGTON, NY — Irvington High School recently held its first Senior Internship Kickoff Meeting before sending off all seniors to their internships for the rest of the school year. In lieu of standard classes, each senior is able to explore an area of interest outside of school by participating in an internship program for four weeks. Principal David Cohen said it was a celebration and an opportunity to send them to their post-secondary experiences with a sense of appreciation and accomplishment.

“They also participated in a workshop about the values of using their senior internship to learn about their interests, gain insight into professionalism and consider how their skills and habits can lead to future success,” he said

During the celebration, each student received a copy of former Wall Street CEO Ben Carpenter’s book “The Bigs,” which follows his journey through his career and life and shares tips to young professionals about finding a great job and successfully establishing a career, according to a district spokesman.

Carpenter’s associate, David Greene met with the seniors to provide them with an overview of the book, answer questions and discuss their upcoming internships and career pursuits. The event also provided the students with an opportunity to reflect on the crucial choices they will make over the next several weeks.

Cohen told the students that they have the unique opportunity to explore something they’re passionate about, challenge themselves and learn something new about themselves, which can ultimately shape the rest of their lives.

Throughout their internships, students are required to submit journal entries and reflections assignments, in which they will reflect on their career goals, challenges and triumphs they faced during their internships, how they solved problems, what they learned about themselves and how they benefited from the experience.

“We are excited to learn more about their experiences and wish each of our seniors an incredible four weeks,” Cohen said.
