The six students competed in "You Be the Chemist Challenge," sponsored by the international chemical company BASF.

Six Irvington Middle School students recently competed in the Westchester Regional “You Be the Chemist Challenge,” sponsored by the international chemical company BASF.

The students who competed were sixth-grader Henry Demarest, seventh-grader Rishit Gupta, eighth-grader Aayushi Jha, seventh-grader Rishikesh Madabhushi, seventh-grader Zachary Rosman and eighth-grader Julia Sabatino. The students participated and answered a number of challenging chemistry and physics related questions. They prepared for the competition by studying on-line tutorials prepared by the YBTC Challenge.

Five of the students, Henry, Rishit, Aayushi, Rishikesh and Zachary, advanced to the statewide challenge on April 25 at the BASF laboratories in Tarrytown. In June, one student from New York state will be named to the national level competition in Philadelphia.
